If you have done any kind of health and wellness research lately, you have most likely come across a lot of articles on the health benefits of antioxidants. In those articles, many times they may have referred to ORAC values of foods. In this article, I would like to give you a clear idea of what an ORAC value is and why it is important.
ORAC simply stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity and is a method of measuring the amount of antioxidants found in various foods. The amount of antioxidants in your diet seems to have a positive correlation on your overall health. Antioxidants have been shown to prevent or slow down the oxidative damage to our bodies caused by free radicals. This is where ORAC values come in. If you want to add more antioxidants into your diet from a natural food source, like fruits and vegetables, rather than from a supplement, you will need to know which foods have what ORAC value, and how much you will want to eat. For example, 100 gramps of a raw Fuji apple with skin has an ORAC value of 2,589 whereas, 100 grams of raw blueberries have a score of 6,552. You can adjust your dietary intake of certain foods accordingly once you are equipped with such knowledge.
