What is the science behind anti-aging creams?
How it works I have found that antioxidants work to neutralize cream oxidation of the skin of free radicals that damage collagen, but ... What more can you say? Please help. Thank you. Thank you] to the responses, everyone! They are very useful. :] I'll keep this question open for a while more input.Oh, and this is for a presentation in AP chemistry. My group and I have a fair share of research, but I want to see if we missed any significant reaction, glue, or whatever. Thanks again!
Vitamin A (retinoic acid) must be the anti-aging component, but usually do not put in sufficient quantities, because they can easily overdose. Thus to collect lots of money from customers for a little concentration of the active compound. You can get antioxidants Vit C and vitamin E. Any leafy Vit E-citrus green, etc - Vitamin C Vitamin A - Carrots Vitamin A (depending on concentration) works by stimulating the skin cells to renew themselves (ie throw), or telling them to differentiate. The collagen in the skin needs Vit C.

Powerful Antioxidants

Vitamin E and other vitamins are organic compounds that the body needs to grow and maintain good health. Many think because vitamins are natural there is no danger of taking too much, but of course this is not true. The maximum intake a day of vitamin E is 1000mg, but not more than 400mg if you have hypertension and since it acts like a blood thinner, consult your health care physician if taking warfarin (Coumadin). It is important to adjust the diet to include vitamin E foods. Keeping in mind that vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin the same as A, D and K which are stored in fat tissues, from a few days up to one hundred and eighty. If too much is absorbed it is stored in the liver and could cause health problem.
Vitamin E promotes a thriving circulatory system, and works against irregular clotting of blood. Studies make known that it helps in the healing of wounds, and some breast cancer diseases. It offers defense against the unwelcome effects of air pollution and some toxins on the body, and it protects the skin against UV radiation and sunburns. It also support and reinforce the body's immune system. Intake of vitamin E seem to help in the treatment of a large variety of conditions, such as cardiac complications resulting from diabetes, arthritis, low sperm count, eye tissue inflammation, asthmatic and menstrual pain.
Vitamin E supplements have been in use in many cases, anemia, burns, atherosclerosis, stroke and other conditions, but the American Heart Association does not recommend the use of the vitamin E supplements. More study is needed for conclusive evidence, although there is some evidence from laboratory studies of many beneficial effects of vitamin E. There are some positive prevention and treatment for cancer and other disease but on large-scale studies it is inconclusive. There is, however, considerable support for the use of vitamin E along with vitamin C and other supplements in the treatment of many ailments.
Wheat germ and wheat germ oil are the richest sources of vitamin E. Additional dietary sources include eggs, various types of nuts like almonds and walnuts, sunflower seeds, and cottonseed oil, olive oil, green leafy vegetables like spinach, and potatoes, avocado, papaya and many others conditions.
Vitamin E is accessible in eight fat-soluble compounds (four tocopherols and four tocotrienols) and the most commonly used is d-alpha-tocopherol or d-alpha-tocopherol acetate. The artificial forms of vitamin E are dl-alpha-tocopherol and some health care professionals prefer to recommend mixed tocopherols, as they are representative of whole foods.
There are two groups of vitamins they are fat and water-soluble. The E Vitamin is a fat-soluble, an antioxidant, anti-aging, vasodilator, and an advocate that acts against the harmful effects of free radicals in the body. Free radicals surface as by-products of metabolism and are known to cause tissue and cellular harm. They may also worsen the causes for cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The E Vitamin protects cell membranes, and also other fat-soluble parts like low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from the harmful effects of free radicals. It is also believed that it prevents bloods cell from sticking, and promoting flexible blood vessels, which in turn will lower blood pressure.
Chronic health conditions could affect the body ability to absorb vitamins, be sure to check with your health care provider. And as always, before starting a vitamin regimen or any physical activities such as excise check with your health care provider.

While oxygen is the key to human survival, it is also responsible for maximum damage to the human body as ‘free radicals'. Free radicals form when oxygen is metabolized or burned by the body for its functions. Free radicals are also produced through environmental pollution and cigarette smoke
Tens of thousands of them are formed everyday in the body. These free radicals travel through the body causing immense damage to the cell structures and causes chronic disease, anti aging as well as other health problems including DNA mutations leading to cancer.
Thankfully the answer to such destruction at the cellular level is anti oxidants. The body produces anti oxidants as well as they available through fruits and vegetables. Anti oxidants scavenge free radicals; convert them to harmless substance before they can cause damage to the cells and tissues of the body.
Vitamin C beta carotenes and vitamin E are rich sources of anti oxidants. While a balance diet rich in these vitamins are an ideal source of natural anti oxidants they are also available as nutritional supplements and have gained much popularity in the past decade.
The efficacy of such anti oxidants remains questionable. Studies have suggested that anti oxidants occurring naturally as in fruits and vegetables have a far more protective effect than the dietary supplements.
However what has been proven beyond doubt by research is that anti oxidant intake does stave off degenerative diseases and especially cancer. It also improves the overall health and boosts immunity.
The best bet for improving your health dramatically is a complex range of natural anti oxidants. Here is a list of anti oxidants found in foods.
Vitamin C: All types of citrus fruits, kiwi, papaya, strawberries and leafy green vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower etc.
Vitamin E: Hard to find sufficient quantities of vitamin E from diet alone. A good source is almonds. Take supplements derived from natural sources.
Carotenoids: Beta carotenes are found in oranges, and vegetables like carrots, apricots, beets, sweet potatoes are a good source. Most of the red and green leef vegetables would have beta carotenes.
Flavanoids: Found in whole lot of vegetables and fruits. Onions, beets, citrus fruits and berries contain flavanoids. Green tea is a good source.
Take 4 to 6 servings of these fruits and vegetables daily for getting the complete range of anti oxidants and you can be sure of keeping many of the degenerative diseases, cancer, blood pressure and heart problems at bay. The icing on the cake is you can look younger and beat the ageing of your skin and tissues.
