Rare Apple Is The Latest Anti Aging Breakthrough

A rare Swiss apple has been acclaimed in the world of fashion and cosmetics as an exciting anti aging breakthrough  - even Michelle Obama is rumored to be a fan.

Used in creams and serums, the stem cells from the Uttwil Spätlauber apple are said to protect the regeneration of skin cells and to delay the appearance of wrinkles. The discovery was made by a Swiss company.

The November issue of Vogue U.S. went so far as to call the choice "super apple", and asked if the tree could be "the new fountain of youth".

The Spätlauber Uttwil, which was first recorded in the 18th century, comes from the Thurgau canton, northern Switzerland.

It is well known for excellent storage capacity that can stay fresh for up to four months after harvesting, long after other varieties have become wrinkled.

However, it has not been widely grown in recent times due to its sour taste and the number of trees have fallen.
Surprising Longevity

After collecting some samples, Swiss researchers set to work and found the answer mostly lies in the surprising longevity of stem cells of the block.

Humans have skin stem cells that replenish and maintain the balance of cells in the skin tissue and regenerate tissue has been damaged.

But with age, the number of skin stem cells and decreases their ability to repair the skin becomes less effective. The result is - with added environmental damage as UV rays - a loss of skin vitality, and inevitably, wrinkles.

Mibelle Biochemistry developed the apple ingredient and found that the apple stem cells  protect cells derived from skin aging.

"We thought there must be something in those blocks which give them their long shelf life," said Beata Hurst, marketing and sales manager Mibelle Biochemistry.

"We have shown that apple stem cells have a positive influence on the vitality of skin stem cells, made them more efficient and they can live longer," Hurst said swissinfo.ch.

The company, which is a subsidiary of the large Swiss retailer Migros, utilizes new technology to replicate Apple's cells called PhytoCellTec ™.

The ingredient of Apple has been snatched by cosmetics companies in Europe, Asia and the United States, including Lancôme and Chantecaille.

According to the Vogue article, presidential style icon and wife Michelle Obama buys a serum using the apple made by Clark's Botanicals, which costs $ 355 (SFr361).

The Spätlauber Uttwiller was found in a collection belonging to ProSpecieRara, a foundation with the objective of preserving traditional breeds of animals and plants in Switzerland.

Swissinfo.ch ProSpecieRara director Béla Bartha said he only had 20 left Uttwiller trees Spätlauber today, which said it was not surprising. Some varieties of fruit have between one and five trees on the left.
